Gazing on the Beauty of the Lord
There’s a scripture I’ve committed to memory that continues to stir something deep within me. It’s found in the book of Psalms. It reads as follows:
“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek:that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,to gaze on the beauty of theLordand to seek him in Temple.”(Psalm 27:4, NIV)Gazing vs. Seeking
The phrase “to gaze on the beauty of the Lord” stood out to me. I thought, “What a beautiful image, David—such poetic expression.”
David intentionally makes a clear distinction between gazing and seeking. At first, it might be tempting to take the verse literally and think, No one can see God. Why would David say this? But then again, if we go down that road, seeking Him wouldn’t be possible either.
Still, it was the act of gazing that moved me more deeply than seeking. My spiritual lens had to adjust to this idea—an idea that, honestly, was new to me.
Have You Ever Called God Beautiful?
How often have you found yourself saying, “God, You are so beautiful”? That’s not usually the first thing that comes out of my mouth in prayer. And yet—I began to wonder: Should it be?
There’s so much of God to behold that even the angels discover something new about Him with every turn. That thought alone is awe-inspiring.
Falling in Love, Again and Again
Here’s what I’ve come to believe—and please, feel free to share what this scripture means to you. We’re in this together. You’re stuck with me 😉.
God is beautiful.
Not just in what He creates—like the intricate design of a leaf or the uniqueness of a snowflake.
He is beauty itself.
And when you look through the eyes of faith, you’re not just imagining Him—you’re gazing into the face of the One who loves you. You fall in love all over again with the One who rescued you from eternal death. Eventually, your walk with Him becomes less about what He’s done and more about who He is.
When Words Aren’t Necessary
There are days—maybe you’ve had them too—when the majesty of God dawns on you. Days when you realize that the One who had every right to give up on you… still calls you His.
In those moments, no sermon needs to be preached. No worship leader has to stir you.
He is simply there.
His presence shifts something in you.
You hear a song lyric and it brings you to your knees—not because of the song itself, but because God already whispered the words to your heart. It feels like a secret, shared between just you and Him.
Just Being with Him
This is different from seeking.
This is dwelling.
This is gazing.
There’s no request—no spiritual checklist. Just you and the Lover of your soul, walking together in love.
Faith Is Gazing
The writer of Hebrews said it well:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
(Hebrews 11:1, KJV)
Dare I add—faith is also gazing on the beauty of the God who loves us more than we could ever deserve, even to the point of the cross?
An Invitation
So here’s an invitation:
Do something different today.
Don’t just believe it in your heart—say it out loud:
“Abba, You are beautiful. And I long to gaze on Your beauty until the day I see You face to face.”
I’ll leave you with this encouragement:
“And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
